Flag-Raising Ceremony Held In Melbourne To Mark Merdeka

MELBOURNE, Aug 31 (Bernama) - A small crowd assembled at the Consulate General of Malaysia's Office here for a flag-raising ceremony to mark the 56th anniversary of Merdeka.

Counsel General of Malaysia to Melbourne Datuk Dr Mohd Rameez Yahaya said Malaysia had grown and prospered since independence and now occupied an important place on the world stage.

The consulate general office, which opened two years ago, has become a focus point for Malaysians in regard to immigration, cultural and documentation matters.

Melbourne, which this week was named by the Economist as the world's most liveable city, attracts many Malaysians, including tourists.

It is reported that there are between 70,000 and 80,000 Malaysians living in Melbourne as well as more than 8,000 students.

The Australia-Malaysia Business Council (AMBC) will hold a gala dinner at the Malaysian-owned Marriott Hotel here on Tuesday to mark the Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day.
